Choosing films that reflect some of the most singular voices of today is one of the higher notes of the festival’s program. If it’s a fact that this marks the entire festival program, it’s also relevant to highlight many of these films that bring the cinema from all over world to Portugal, by condensing new visions, a new imagination and a constant need to chase what’s new in the world of moving images.

Let’s start with the debut feature of the duo that marks the focus of this year’s Silvestre section. Jessica Forever debuted in Toronto and has since fueled a buzz of praise across the globe. Jessica Forever burns in violent romanticism: in a dystopian future where bloodthirsty youngsters form a matriarchal family clad in bulletproof vests and love. A first feature that is the culmination of the duo’s work in the short films (they won the Golden Bear in 2014) – which can be seen this year in Focus Silvestre. The retrospective is integral (films made in double and individually) and there will be a performance gaming that will be the highest moment of this focus.

Burning, Lee Chang Dong’s latest film, which was shown in competition at the last Cannes Film Festival and was considered by the media as one of the most important films of the year 2018. After eight years without filming, Lee Chang-dong returns to large screen with an adaptation of a short story by Haruki Murakami from the book ‘The Elephant Evaporates’. A mystery story built on a love triangle to which one of the vertices disappeared. A disturbing psychological puzzle that burns slowly over the riddles of youth. According to the director himself, this is a film about the anger of younger generations, their sense of powerlessness and how they are aware that their lives will be worse than their parents.

Shortly after we screened Offside at IndieLisboa 2007, Jafar Panahi was arrested and banned from filming for 20 years by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Iran. However, 3 Faces is already the fourth film that the director does illegally, and his return to the female world and the social difficulties women face in their country. Three women of three generations, three actresses to play actresses and one video within one film within another, with Panahi to make of itself. A complex set of mirrors that brings us back to the best of modern Iranian cinema.

Returning to the festival is also the filmography of Mike Leigh, one of the most renowned British filmmakers today. Screening in the Silvestre section will be Peterloo, a reenactment of the massacre of the same name, resulting from the attack of the British crown to a peaceful pro-democracy demonstration.

We close today’s list with I Was at Home But, by Angela Shanelec, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, also premiering in IndieLisboa’s venues. A touching drama that tracks how a teenager’s existential issues can redefine the eyes of the adults around her.

Created in 2011, the Portuguese Film Fund is a complementary tool to support the post-production of Portuguese films, a partnership with Fundação GDA, Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (ULHT), Digital Mix Música e Imagem, The Yellow Color, e a Portugal Film – Agência Internacional de Cinema Português. It is one of the most iconic works of world cinema. The Apartment won five Oscars, three of which went to producer, director and screenwriter, Billy Wilder. A classic that mixes, in perfect doses, comedy and drama, purity and cynicism. Jack Lemmon is an employee who seeks to rise in the hierarchy, giving up his apartment for the extramarital affairs of his employers.

This edition of IndieLisboa, in partnership with idealista, will present a screening with a restored version in 4K of the film, from the original 35mm negative, by Park Circus in collaboration with MGM.

Zone W/O People is a “gaming performance” created by Oklou e Krampf. The two created a video game which is played by Oklou while singing: gaming, cinema, music and performance, all playfully mixed up. Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, who are the focus of the Silvestre section this year, are the ones that brought the idea to the table, after being given carte blanche to program an event inside IndieLisboa 2019. A rare moment that will happen only once in the city of Lisbon and which nobody should miss out on.

There has been an intense discussion around the place of women in world culture. In a year in which the programs of many world festivals reserve a special place for women and are committed to giving visibility to their work, IndieLisboa brings back to the big screen the visions and stories of different women. From the life stories from entirely different places, to matriarchal utopias, to gender diversity, humor and love, the focus on the work of one of the most important artists of French cinema, there are several stories here that open up space to talk and discover female creation.

Recently, the Cahiers du cinéma magazine published a manifesto signed by Bertrand Mandico, Yann Gonzalez and the Vinel & Poggi duo. It is titled ‘Flamme’ and defends ‘A cinema for dreamers who sweat, monsters who cry and children who burn.’ Jessica Forever burns in this violent romanticism: in a dystopian future, bloodthirsty youths form a matriarchal family led by Jessica, the only one who has ever given them love and understanding. A first feature that mirrors the duo’s work in the short format (which is this year’s Silvestre Focus).

Due to health issues, actress Anna Karina, who this year is the focus of a retrospective organized in partnership by IndieLisboa and Cinemateca Portuguesa, will not be able to travel to Lisbon as we had announced. The cancellation of her presence at the festival is by medical indication, unexpected health reasons that, at the last moment, prohibit her from traveling.

IndieLisboa and Cinemateca Portuguesa deeply regret this cancellation, which will not affect the screenings of the films scheduled in the cycle, many of them never before or rarely screened in Portugal. The presentations that Anna Karina would make before the films, as well as the conversation scheduled for May 8th at Cinemateca, are also cancelled.

More than 270 films, a couple of dozen parallel activities and a week full of parties are the ingredients for the sixteenth edition of IndieLisboa by Allianz. The International Film Festival is returning to the capital between May 2nd and May 12th at Cinema São Jorge, Culturgest, Cinemateca Portuguesa and Cinema Ideal.

Respecting what has been the continued commitment to national production, IndieLisboa 2019 presents 53 Portuguese films, all of them premiering at the festival. The program of short films is also diverse, with a selection that ranges from animation to fiction, from documentary to more a experimental terrain, compiling new authors and renowned figures from Portuguese and international cinema. Brazilian cinema is featured this year as one of the Independent Heroes of the festival, punctuating all the sections of the festival with some of the most interesting names of  recent film production from our sibling country. A selection that questions Brazilian cinema of today and intends to open the discussion around what will happen to the seventh art in the future in a country in the face of political uncertainty. This will be the subject of the debate with some of these filmmakers taking place on May 11th at 17h, at Culturgest.

Special attention is also given to the unique voices of some filmmakers who have become a must at festivals, critical venues and film theatres across the globe. The focus dedicated to the most enthusiastic duo for the press and public in the last 12 months, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel, with a full retrospective of all their short films, the debut of their first feature Jessica Forever, and a completely unpredictable gaming performance (6 May, Carpintarias de São Lázaro, 21h30). Still in the Silvestre section, the new film by Jafar Parhadi about the Iranian culture in 3 Faces, the return of Lee Chang-dong to the big screen with the adaptation of a story by Haruki Murakami, in Burning; the filmography of Mike Leigh, one of the most established British filmmakers of today, in Peterloo and I Was at Home But, by Angela Shanelec, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival.

In the family and children’s section of the festival, IndieJunior, the workshops complete the film programming. This year, there’s a special emphasis on sound in cinema and animation. In the special screenings there is space for the meeting between music and moving image, at the Film-concert Mundo Animado (May 4th, 16h, Culturgest), and a large Picnic on grass at Palácio Galveias library garden closes the screening Algures entre o Céu e a Terra (May 11th, 15h Culturgest).

A special word for the retrospective dedicated to Anna Karina, the second Independent Hero of this year, which will feature a conversation with the actress (May 8th, 19h00, Cinemateca Portuguesa). At the LisbonTalks, IndieLisboa explores the role of sound in Film, with a panel of conversations and guests that represent much of what was the evolution and practice of the medium in Portugal in recent years. At night, IndiebyNight occupies Casa Independente with parties that complement the programming of documentaries about music (IndieMusic). Ama Romanta with João Peste will invite several of the elements that marked the history of the publisher (May 9th); the meeting of 10 women artists will give us a chance to revisit much of the music that has been made in Portugal in the last 20 years (May 10th) and the trip to the psychadelic African sounds by Jacco Gardner and Maria P. (May 8th).

IndieLisboa’s nights are long. The IndiebyNight program brings to the stage (once again at Casa Independente) and to the dance floor the sounds that mark the programming of IndieMusic, the section dedicated to the screening of the latest music documentaries. In a year marked by prolific national production, there will be space to visit much of the Portuguese music that has marked different generations since the 80s, but those aren’t the only suggestions for this week of parties.

Special attention should be paid to the night of May 10th, which will bring to Casa Independente’s stage 10 bands and musical projects by women that have had an important role in Portuguese music from the last 20 years. From Adelaide Ferreira to the Anarchicks, from Dirty Coal Train to Aurora Pinho, the night will be theirs and it surely will make festival history. Another night that’s worth our attention is the one on May 8th, the musical choices of Jacco Gardner, Gio and Maria P. around the African rhythms from Zambia.

Let us also celebrate the legacy of the mythical Ama Romanta, a publisher created in 1986 by João Peste. On May 9th, the stage of Casa Independente will give space to the musical choices of Pop Dell’Arte’s main singer side by side with Zé Pedro Moura (Pop Dell’Arte; Dead Hand); Paulo Monteiro (Pop Dell’Arte); Luis San Payo (Croix Sainte; Pop Dell’Arte); Sei Miguel; Fala Mariam and Rodrigo Amado.

To close the sixteenth edition of IndieLisboa, on Saturday May 11th, we return to Culturgest’s Garage, for a party that brings Brazil to the center of the Portuguese capital. The entrance is free.

After Tony Conrad Completely in the Present (2017) and Milford Graves Full Mantis (2018), this year Nariz Entupido decided to invite António Caramelo (artist) to develop an exercise around Parallel Planes by Nicole Wegner. The matter for this year’s edition is not exclusive to one author but many. Questions about authorship, the existence of structures of autonomous productions and their respective sustainability, the act as an affirmative gesture, a will to transform. Parallel planes in different parts of the globe. Different sources, similar anxieties, incessant searches.

Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel are the duo of directors in focus in the Silvestre section. We show all their films, including their first feature, Jessica Forever. The duo will lead this evening with a set with a lot of hip hop and some trance and two very special guests: Camille Delvecchio and Benoît David of Grand Blanc.

Emmanuel “Jagari”Chanda is the legendary vocalist of WITCH, a cult band from Zambia in the 70s, famous for its mix of psychedelic rock and African rhythms. In 2016 the musician Jacco Gardner traveled to Zambia to meet Jagari and recover the forgotten sounds of the WITCH that culminated in a European tour in 2017. This is the story of the film We Intend to Cause Havoc. The sounds of Zambia and Africa will be on the music that Gio, Jacco and Maria P. Will bring to the after party of the film. We invited Cara // Vag // Yo, a duo of Brazilian-Portuguese Djs formed by Beatriz Valleriani and Kamila Ferreira, for a funk night. IndieLisboa in a collective trance in the last party of the festival.

It is undeniable the importance that sound has in its ability to direct attention when it comes to the moving image. Whether it’s through music, speech, the way it occupies the visual narrative, or the way it enhances feelings and our glance within a scene, the position it occupies in Film is crucial to define how we understand a story. For such reason, this year’s LisbonTalks will be about, almost exclusively, this important creative element of film production, in a set of four debates and masterclasses that will take a look at the different aspects related to sound. Organized in partnership with Universidade Lusófona, between May 3rd and May 11th, we’ll be able not only to know more about this specific area, but also to understand a little more about the recent history of sound in cinema through the voice of some of the professionals who have worked in it during the last decades in Portugal and not only.

As usual, the LisbonTalks will also be the place to meet and debate around both focuses of the Independent Hero section, this year dedicated to the filmography of Anna Karina and recent cinema made in Brazil. The first one will be with Anna Karina herself, the second will host the filmmakers Bruna Carvalho Almeida, Caetano Gotardo, Felipe Bragança, Helvécio Marins Jr. and Juliana Antunes.

Before the development of technology allowed the infinite possibilities that we know today to sound in cinema, such was an art form which, even though it was labelled “silent”, was in fact seldom so (to paraphrase one of the participants of this panel). Drawing from the work of preservation, restoration and DVD launch of a set of Portuguese silent films carried out by the Cinemateca Portuguesa, two aspects of the work of the restoration of sound in the context of the archives will be explained: on the one hand the composition and performance of musical accompaniment for silent films in a contemporary context, and on the other hand the reconstitution of an original score and its contemporary arranging.

Born Hanne Karin in Denmark, the cult actress is an unavoidable and defining figure of the European cinema of the 60s, a feat she achieved during her twenties. Anna Karina meets the festival audience to talk about her career including  several of the most important films that she acted on and that are part of the retrospective made of 17 features and five short films that IndieLisboa and the Cinemateca Portuguesa organized in the context of the Independent Hero section, but also about her less known work as director and scriptwriter.

Moderated by programmer and producer Gustavo Beck, this debate builds on the programme with which IndieLisboa honors Brazilian cinema in the Independent Hero section to talk about the present and the future of this national cinema at a particularly intense and worrying moment in the country’s political and social history. With the attendance of the filmmakers Felipe Bragança (Bring Me The Head of Carmen M.), Caetano Gotardo (Your Bones and Your Eyes), Helvécio Marins Jr. (Homing), Bruna Carvalho Almeida (The Young Baumanns) and Juliana Antunes (Plano Controle), all of whom with recent filmographies, not yet started at the time of the creation of IndieLisboa.

It’s already one of the cult happenings of IndieLisboa. A screening that lasts all night long that proposes a more extreme trip around cinema, one that rips the boundaries of genre and themes, without any kind of taboos. Disconcerting films and fractured themes that one digests better during then night and which happen twice this year. This time around, there isn’t one but two Mouth of Madness Marathons.

In the first one, scheduled for May 4th, at Cinema Ideal, no taboo are left one: from the queer wrestling of Cassandro, el Exótico!, who gets on the ring with pink and shiny latex on, to the cowboys who tell stories around the bonfire about a killer Santa Clause (Chowboys: An American Folktale) and an evil dress that brings bad luck to its wearer (In Fabric), a cannabis vending machine (Tomatic) and a man who likes his abductors more than they like him (Braquer Poitiers). There are films for every taste, including a special fetish for eggs (Egg Touching).

In the second marathon, scheduled for Saturday, May 11th, at Cinema Ideal, we ask: What is the feminine capable of? And we answer: everything! In this set of films that run all throughout the night we get to know: Goldie (the instagirl known as Slick Woods) who wins all her daily battles; the friends who know how to have fun all night (Wine Wenches); the Goddess, primitive deity of humanity, who fights against the forces of patriarchy (Seder-Masochism); the possibility of creating the perfect lover with a 3D printer (Slug Life), and, finally Alexa’s emancipatory journey through a palace that hides forced aesthetic surgeries, oppressive surveillance systems, and a cannibalistic reality TV competition (Make Me Up).

The four mentors will be Eliane Ferreira (Muiraquitã Filmes, Brazil), filmmakers Dominga Sotomayor (Chile), Fernando Eimbck (Mexico) and Thomas Matthews (USA).

We can’t forget to mention the usual Lisbon Screenings, promoted in partnership with Portugal Film – International Portuguese Film Agency, an activity behind closed doors that takes place between the 3rd and 5th of May, which aims to give visibility to Portuguese cinema, concentrating in the same place international films, producers, directors and decision makers. There will be 14 films in total (eight feature films and six short films), eight of which will be released and looking for a world premiere and six looking for an international premiere. About 30 international programmers and other industry professionals will attend this year’s Lisbon Screenings.

After creating a Spotify profile of the festival with all the songs from the IndieMusic section, IndieLisboa continues to extend its online presence with a profile in Tinder and this news comes a special giveaway: IndieCrush.

Users are invited to search for IndieLisboa in the application and swipe right to be able to get a match with the festival. Then, they simply have to wait for the dream to come true and receive one of the 10 double tickets we are offering during each campaign. The screening will be chosen by the festival according to the interests of the person.

The first IndieCrush campaign takes place from the 22nd to the 29th of April and the second from April 30th to May 5th.
