idealista present at IndieLisboa 2019

In its 2019 edition, IndieLisboa will have the help of the idealista brand as one of its sponsors. This partnership reinforces the festival’s strategy to join forces with brands from different sectors, which can be actively integrated in both marketing and creation of activations that become part of the festival, since idealista believes in the capacity of the event to generate value and return.

The real estate advertising portal idealista brand will be a good example of this strategy. The joint creation of actions will strengthen the link between the two brands and the creation of content will be very fruitful. We will have more news about these very soon.

“Over at idealista, we are very proud to support cinema at the largest International Film Festival of Portugal. We like to be present in the Portuguese cultural life and we always have a special affection for all the cultural projects we get to work with and IndieLisboa is one of the best chances we have to demonstrate that. ”

César Oteiza – General Director of idealista Portugal

“We are very happy to have a partnership with a brand such as idealista, because we have the opportunity to work with different sectors and show that cinema can often have a dialogue with different brands and that working together can give birth to even more creative and original ideas.”

Miguel Valverde – Director of IndieLisboa

IndieMusic 2019: Miles Davis, Swans, Karen Dalton and a lot of Portuguese music

Here is the (almost full) program of this year’s IndieMusic, the section that is entirely dedicated to music within the IndieLisboa programming. We invite everyone to immerse themselves in the moving images of this year’s films in the teaser below and embrace the section’s songs and artists in our playlist.

It is a strong year for Portuguese music. Ela é uma Música is a journey through the world of rock in Portugal, through the voices of its illustrious unknown women. We explore the suburbs of Lisbon in which there’s a series of musicians and producers from different generations and origins. Batida de Lisboa goes from Angola to São Tomé, passing through Cape Verde and Guine Bissau. The trip ends in Alvalade, the neighborhood of Um Punk Chamado Ribas, one of the most important names in Portuguese music and one of the main drivers of the punk movement.

Also in Portuguese and in a very special screening, the return of Rollana Beat. The band invited 13 directors, including some of our festival’s familiar faces such as Edgar Pêra, Isabel Aboim Inglês or Leonor Noivo, to create videos for 13 songs made between 1998-2002.

From the rest of the world comes the folk of Karen Dalton (The Bright Light – Karen and the Process), the free jazz of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra (Fire Music), the coolness of Miles Davis (Birth of the Cool), the DIY music from bands such as Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu or Fugazi (Parallel Plans), the return of legendary rock band from Zambia, WITCH, with the help of Jacco Gardner (We Intend to Cause Havoc) and the indescribable energy of the Swans (Where Does a Body End?).

The jury of IndieMusic’s competitive section, which awards a prize of 1000€ for its best film, is composed of musician Bruno Pernadas, journalist and music publisher Isilda Sanches and music critic and illustrator Tiago da Bernarda (aka O Gato Mariano).

To ready our bodies for music, we will be celebrating the release of IndieMusic’s programming with an IndieLisboa warm-up party at Casa Independente next Saturday, March 9, with the songs of all these bands and artists.

Jonathan Vinel and Caroline Poggi – focus of the 2019 Silvestre section

Since the premiere in 2014 of Tant qu’il nous reste des fusils à pompe (which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival of that year), the duo of French directors Jonathan Vinel and Caroline Poggi has never stopped filming compulsively and has become widely acclaimed, both by critics and the public. Notre Heritage, Martin Pleure and After School Knife Fight have had a brilliant run through many film festivals, where they drew attention for their originality, irreverence, talent and contemporaneity. Her debut feature Jessica Forever, which will be one of the IndieLisboa’s International Competition titles, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and since then something became clear: they are the artists of the moment and that is why IndieLisboa decided that the Silvestre Focus of 2019 should be about their work. A complete retrospective of their work will mark this edition of the festival (both with films made as a duo and individually) and a gaming performance is bound to be one of the strongest moments of the section.

The Silvestre section is a panorama of free cinema, in a time in which it becomes increasingly meaningless to speak of documentary or fiction as closed territories, in which cinema can decide to expand or remain faithful to the traditional languages that were in its origin. Silvestre is a competitive section with its own jury, which is drawn from this freedom with a program of shorts and feature films that demonstrates an intense year of production. In addition to the focus of the section, there are other highlights that should be mentioned such as the new feature by director Radu Jude, who was previously awarded in other editions of IndieLisboa, I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians, a fiction that questions the presence of fascism in contemporary Romania from a reconstitution of a historical episode.

Burning, the latest film by Lee Chang Dong, which was screened was part of the competition at the latest Cannes festival and was considered by the specialized press one of the most important films of 2018, will be screened at the festival before premiering in Portuguese theatres thanks to Alambique Filmes. In Coincoin et les Z’inhumains, award-winning Bruno Dumont returns to the characters of the highly acclaimed series (and film) P’tit Quinquin for a new irresistible season of four episodes that you’ll be able to binge watch at the festival. Finally there’s Blue, by Apitchatpong Weerasethakul, part of a project created for the Opéra national de Paris to make a film that isn’t a dance at all, but a reflection on an invented space, a cursed and insomniac body, a very accurate visual and sound experience.

The 16th edition of IndieLisboa – International Film Festival takes place from May 2nd to 12th at Cinema São Jorge, Culturgest, Cinema Ideal and at Cinemateca Portuguesa.

The first IndieLisboa party happens in early March

It is already widely known that the IndieLisboa festival will run between May 2nd and 12th but Lisbon will start warming up to it with the first of many of its parties on March 9th.

The programmers of the IndieMusic section will go on stage and gives us a little taste of what’s to come, by playing us the sounds and songs from the films of the most rhythmic section of the festival.

IndieMusic is dedicated to screening films related to musicians and bands from around the world and there is no better way to promote this year’s films with a party full of music.

March 9th | 22h – 2h | Casa Independente | Free entrance

Anna Karina in Lisbon for a retrospective organized by Cinemateca and IndieLisboa in May

Anna Karina will come to Lisbon next May for a retrospective co-organized by Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema and IndieLisboa, which gives her one of the Independent Heroes spotlights of the 2019 edition. Special attention will be given to her filmography in the context of the French Nouvelle Vague and beyond that. The retrospective will take place entirely at Cinemateca between May 2nd and 11th, with the presence of the actress, who will be introducing some of her films and will be available for a special meeting with the public.

Born in Copenhagen in 1940, Hanna Karin Barke Bayer, arrived in Paris at the age of 17, where she started going by Anna Karina, thanks to Coco Chanel. One of the most iconic actresses of contemporary cinema in the French 60s, she worked with Jean-Luc Godard in a series of important films of that decade, in which she became his work and life companion. Anna Karina is one of the great stars of European cinema, having also developed her own directing, writing and singing career.

Cinemateca and IndieLisboa conceived an ambitious retrospective that aims to show the varied intensity of her work: the totality of her films with Godard, her films with Valerio Zurlini, Jacques Rivette, Luchino Visconti, George Cukor, Volker Schlöndorff, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and, among the rarest titles, the first feature film she wrote, performed and starred in 1973 (Vivre ensemble) and a film which also never premiered in Portugal, Anna, by Pierre Koralnik, with music and songs by Serge Gainsbourg. As part of the festival’s “Director’s Cut” section, in yet another facet of the collaboration between Cinemateca and IndieLisboa, the recent documentary by Dennis Berry in which Anna Karina comments her long career (Anna Karina souviens-toi, 2017) will be screened at the festival.

Sorry, this entry is only available in European Portuguese.

Edgar Pêra e Leonor Teles convidados do Cineclube IndieLisboa

Sorry, this entry is only available in European Portuguese.

Punk is not Daddy

Check out the promotion image for IndieLisboa 2019, created by the illustrator Alva Skog

From less than 3 months to the 16th International Film Festival, which happens from May 2nd to 12th at Cinema São Jorge, Culturgest, Cinema Ideal e Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinemathe revealing of the image launches the season of news and surprises about the next edition.

The imagens were created by the swedish illustrator Alva Skog, who expresses and questions ideas and ideals such as gender inequality and hidden racism through her illustration work. Having recently graduated from Central Saint Martins, Alva is part of the Jelly Futures scheme, which finds the best fresh talent from all sources, offering them a route to a commercial art career. She has already worked with notable clients such as The Guardian, Apple and It’s Nice That (to name a few).

One of the specific features of many Alva’s works is to use exaggeration to represent some elements. In IndieLisboa, the main element is the crow, which was deconstructed by Alva’s point of view. Alva represents it in a funny, straightforward and exaggerated way (image below).

From this first image, she created the other images telling a story among them: IndieJúnior, the section for children and youth; IndieByNight, the nightlife calendar with parties and concerts happening daily during the festival; and LisbonTalks, a parallel section with talks, workshops, masterclasses and debates.

The news about the programme of the 16th edition of the festivals are coming soon.
