A man and a woman live in a village near Berlin. The city seems far away. They’ve loved each other since they were children. Inseparable. They’re now both in their early thirties. Markus is a metalworker and a member of the local fire brigade. Ella works a couple of hours a week as a domestic and sings is the local choir. People eye them with a mixture of astonishment and suspicion: They seem so happy, so innocent – and sometimes clueless as two children. Markus visits the nearest town to attend a training course with his fire brigade. That night there’s a lot of drinking, laughing and dancing. The next morning Markus wakes up in the apartment of the waitress, Rose. He can’t recall much of what happened. When he tries to find out, it’s the beginning of a love for his wife.
Bandai, an successful attorney, and Kyoko, working in a real estate office, start having an affair out of a sudden, although both are married. This way they try to find a relieve from the pressures and fears which arise from their everyday life, in which they feel forced to mask their inner emotions. The Travelling people of Ireland maintain a culture and language which sets them apart from the rest of the population, and have been the victims of much misunderstanding and prejudice that continues to this day. Shattering existing stereotypes, Pavee Lackeen presents an intimate portrait of a resilient and spirited young girl and her proud, dignified family struggling day by day against faceless bureaucracy, poverty and prejudice.

It takes certain breed of men and women to live and work in such an environment. The cold, the darkness and the isolation affects each one in different ways. Life seems to loose some of its essential components in these conditions, where sometimes the distinction between what is real and what is surreal disappear… Loeffen, and his beloved dog companion Blackie are about to drive to the nearest settlement Zama, some 150 miles away. It will take him the full daylight time to drive and buy supplies for the rig crew. He can not help but feel giddy about his trip; just to escape the work and the elements; to get away from the routine, even if it happens to be for the shortest day of the year. Zama is isolated in the woods and far from the highways. It makes no sense to an outsider to consider Zama as a destination of any sort but for Loeffen it is a welcome change if nothing else. This small settlement in the middle of nowhere gives Loeffen more than he bargained, as fate and destiny conspire to bring him to an isolated cabin outside Zama for one bitterly cold night – the longest night of the year.
