Panique au village

Animated plastic toys like Cowboy, Indian and Horse have problems, too. Cowboy and Indian’s plan to surprise Horse with a homemade birthday gift backfires when they destroy his house instead. Surreal adventures take over as the trio travel to the center of the earth and discover a parallel underwater universe where pointy-headed (and dishonest!) creatures live. Each speedy character is voiced – and animated – as if their very air contains both amphetamines and laughing gas.

Our Pride and Glory

With Lenin at their centre, the old heroes of the Soviet era observe the day-to-day life in the Ukrainian village of Buryn, which is growing apart from its past. The monuments were erected to fill the void of a city destroyed in the WWII, and in a post-communist world they’re threatened with a fate of decay.

Walk in the Flesh takes the original images of Scanners by David Cronenberg subjects them and the sound to a robotic and repetitive treatment, and thus gives them a new reading.

Origin of the Species

A 70-year-old man living in a remote part of Scotland obsessed for years with “trying to really understand” Darwin’s book, of which he is great fan. While pursuing this passion, he has constantly worked on small inventions to make his life easier.

Os Olhos do Farol

A lighthouse-keeper and his daughter live apart in a rocky small island exposed to the elements. The girl develops an unique complicity with the sea, which brings her toys in the shape of objects brought to the beach. To the rhythm of the waves, this objects reveal ancient events, memories which the tides can’t erase.

We Don’t Wanna Make You Dance

In 1983 the New York City teenage band, Miller, Miller, Miller & Sloan was hot and popular, playing at such famous venues as CBGB’s. By 1988 the band was still together but life was intervening. By 1993 it ‘disbanded’. Then in 2007 the filmmaker went back to see what happened to them as individuals, to explore where the ‘dream’ of making it and the intense creativity of that time had taken them in their lives. This is not a typical ‘behind the music’ story, but one which speaks to the resilience and resourcefulness that people can acquire in pursuing creative goals.

When I Stop Looking

When I Stop Looking forces the gaze over those portrayed, each with a specific and disturbing facial deformity; the longer they stay on screen the more we can understand them beyond their appearance, in their expressions and affections.

Out of Love depicts the lives of children trying to survive the aftermath of the war in Kosovo by selling cigarettes on the street. Gripping monologues performed by the children against the eerie backdrops of Pristina, reveal their memories of loss and fear.

Orly

End of winter. Two hours at the Paris Orly airport. A young woman falls in love with a stranger on her way home to her husband. A young couple falls apart on their first big journey. A mother and her teenage son are on the way to the funeral of the child’s father. In the crowd, a woman finally dares to read the farewell letter of her lover. In the airport, everybody is busy dealing with his own destiny.
