“For its rich and intricate investigation of the recent colonial past and its interaction with earlier times and traditions in the Canary Islands, through expertly chosen and edited archive footage, audio interviews and a completely immersive soundscape, the jury unanimously awards the Feature Film Grand Prize of the City of Lisbon to the Spanish documentary On the Names of the Goats, directed by Miguel G. Morales and Silvia Navarro.”

SĂ NU UCIZI/THOU SHALT NOT KILL
Gabi Virginia Șarga, Cătălin Rotaru, Roménia, fic., 2018, 120′
“For its precisely constructed screenplay that investigates personal morality and collective responsibility, for its impeccable direction and its towering lead performance by Alexandru Sucia, the jury awards the TVCine & Series Channels Special Award to the Romanian drama Thou Shalt Not Kill, directed by Catalin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Sarga.”
JESSICA FOREVER
Caroline Poggi, Jonathan Vinel, França, fic., 2018, 97′
“The same award goes to a film of intense seductive power and boldness. Within an unconventional visual concept, video-game aesthetics and heavy metal, sci-fi genre tropes and medieval initiation rituals, magic realism and poetry alchemically blend together to create an unexpected <hyper-reality>. An unsettling vision of a possible future, existing in the realm of the <uncanny> (in the psychoanalytical sense). A possible comment on today’s increasing phenomenon of radicalized youth and a post-modern rite of passage into manhood, this shape-shifting film is essentially a meditation on the transformative and healing power of human connection.”
The award goes to Jessica Forever, by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel

PAST PERFECT
Jorge Jácome, Portugal, fic./doc./exp., 2019, 23′
“Skilfully condensed and cleverly staged, this film lets you simply indulge in a strong world of images. The film talks about nostalgia and emotion, asking whether feelings were more immediate and authentic in the past. Formally cleverly layered and with always surprising moments, partly with humour, partly biting but often very emotional, this film left strong traces on us.”

“We just sat there for a moment…we couldn’t believe it. A prank of a prank, what a game! This film gives us the dimension and potential of the today’s world and where it can lead. An astonishing research edited and narrated in a seductive and intelligent way. Constructing and deconstructing our reality within 20 minutes.”

THE GIRL WITH TWO HEADS
Betzabé Garcia, Reino Unido, fic., 2018, 13′
“From the beginning we were fascinated by the strong cinematographic handwriting. The film captivates with a great rhythm and it’s visual approach. We are very close to the protagonist as she defines her view on femininity finding her place as a woman in society.”

A MINHA AVÓ TRELOTÓTÓ
Catarina Ruivo, Portugal, fic./doc., 2018, 173′
“The best film we have seen among the features of National Competition is the film that provoked our strongest emotions. As a portrait of a life lived it generously shares an approach to a close person as much as it is a journey into the past and across continents. The film employs many different formal strategies, all of them a veracious indication of empathy and love. We give the award for Best Portuguese Feature to A Minha Avó Trelotótó by Catarina Ruivo.”

CAMPO
Tiago Hespanha, Portugal, doc., 2019, 100′
“We have been passionated about a title that explores a territory, actually a playground, where rituals of life and death take place. A work that confronts man with nature in a dramatic but also humorous way, calling into question mankind’s origins and possible end. A film that reveals the potential of a filmmaker whose presence is essential concerning the force of this film.F or all these reasons, we have agreed to give the award for Best Director in a Portuguese Feature Film to Tiago Hespanha for Campo.”

Sílvia das Fadas, EUA/Áustria/Portugal, doc./exp., 2018, 35′

O MAR ENROLA NA AREIA
Catarina Mourão, Portugal, fic./doc./exp., 2019, 16′
“As we mutually agreed on a film that showed us haunting images of a beach we decided to give a special mention. It is not a special mention as a compromise but one that wants to recognize a work composed of astonishing found footage which blends an intimate and feverish narration of sexual difference and harassment with the daily routines of fascism. We give a special mention to The Hissing of Summer Sands by Catarina Mourão.”
Prémio Novo Talento FCSH/NOVA
FCSH/NOVA New Talent Award
(1500 Euros)
PODER FANTASMA
Afonso Mota, Portugal, fic., 2019, 23′
“As we understand the Prize for New Talent as a recognition of promises for a cinema to come we decided to give the award to a film that surprised from beginning to end with its inventiveness, tenor and ruptures in inflection. A film in which the fantastic merges with the comedic while meandering into an image of a protagonist lost in his nocturnal search for sounds.”

André Ferreira, Portugal, doc., 2019, 8′
“The tone of the script and the pace of the editing pulls us into the director’s poetic documentary which starts as an observation of a daily routine told through still photography, but soon becomes an emotional reflection on growing old, overcoming loneliness and personal fears. The prize of Novíssimos goes to a love letter to a grandmother: Estas Mãos São Minhas by André Miguel Ferreira.”

BATIDA DE LISBOA/LISBON BEAT
Rita Maia, Vasco Viana, Portugal, doc., 2019, 65′
“It was not easy to come up with a decision. Within our own criteria, we attempted to find what we consider to be a junction between music/cinematography and a standing global sociocultural relevance. And the winner is: Batida de Lisboa by Rita Maia and Vasco Viana.”

INVISÍVEL HERÓI/INVISIBLE HERO
Cristèle Alves Meira, Portugal/França, fic., 2019, 27′
“For the moving and brave way the protagonist materializes the life he imagined without abdicating it’s dimension of dream, and for showing us that it’s on the searching for that we meet the other person, accompanied by the musical dimension of life, the Tree of Life award is given to the film by Cristèle Alves Meira, Invisível Herói.”

A MINHA AVÓ TRELOTÓTÓ/MY GRANDMOTHER TRELOTÓTÓ

JÚRI AMNISTIA INTERNACIONAL
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL JURY
Prémio Amnistia Internacional

SETE ANOS EM MAIO/SEVEN YEARS IN MAY
Affonso Uchôa, Brasil/Argentina, fic./doc., 2019, 42′
“It wasn’t an easy decision. At the end of many hours of discussion, two stories told in Portuguese, separated by an ocean, ended up on the table. Very different narratives that share the idea of exclusion, of insecurity. One of them about the city’s suburban area whose existence is ignored and oppressed. The other, about the security forces that make the place insecure.
Even though ‘Batida de Lisboa’, by Rita Maia and Vasco Viana, has touched us by the way music and culture are a weapon of anti-fascist resistance, for the jury, another film is the winner for it’s urgency of speaking about a country in which the outcast may be a policeman and a policeman may be an outcast. Where women and black, poor and LGBTI+ people are revoltingly beaten. A country where the policeman beats you and won’t let you leave the fringes, condemns you to be another Rafael. The jury has attributed the International Amnesty Award to the brazilian short film by Affonso Uchôa, Sete Anos em Maio.”
