On April 30th, Culturgest will host a concert by Carlos “Zingaro” – alongside David Alves, Alvaro Rosso and Ulrich Mitzlaff – and the film A Escuta, by Inês Oliveira, dedicated to the career of this unparalleled violist, improviser, instrumentalist and composer , as part of the programming of the IndieMusic section of the 19th edition of IndieLisboa.
Carlos “Zingaro” was at the forefront, in front of everyone, opening up many of the new ways that Portuguese arts found in the 1960s and 1970s. In his late teens, still in the 1960s, after having received everything the school could have to his violin, Carlos “Zingaro” created the band Plexus, where rock joins free jazz and contemporary music, in a boldness of convictions well ahead of time. Perhaps because of this, he became a key musician for an April preparation, as he approached the theater as a composer, but also as a scenographer and costume designer.
In the late 1970s, his improvisation assimilated new studies and experiences, appearing as a key figure in the light of European free jazz ever since.
Also in the visual arts, “Zingaro” was restless, leaving an unmistakable and dreamlike trace in painting, illustration and comics. An applauded career, naturally indescribable, but which the watchful eye of director Inês Oliveira transformed A Escuta, into a miraculous and essential film, to debut in the next edition of the festival, in the IndieMusic section, at Culturgest. A double journey, on the big screen and then in concert, looking at the past before and living the present after, from the intimate to the public act.
