Teresa Villaverde’s Colo is the opening film of the 14th IndieLisboa and will be screened on May 3rd at Cinema São Jorge. Colo premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. I am not Your Negro, Raoul Peck’s documentary based on James Baldwin’s writings, is the closing film of the festival, on May 14th, at Culturgest’s Main Auditorium.
Colo is a modern and quiet reflexion about our shared paths as European societies of today, about our isolation, our perplexity when facing difficulties, about our city lives and inside our families. It is an increasingly tense film which never actually explodes.
The ambitious project by James Baldwin, Remember This House, could have been one of the great books about black history in the United States of America. The document, which would tell the story of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., never actually saw the light of day. The author passed way, only having written 30 pages. With I Am Not Your Negro, Raoul Peck uses that story as a starting point and analyzes the struggle of the Civil Rights in the USA, focusing on the race issues in Hollywood and in the american society of the last 30 years. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the documentary uses the original words written by Baldwin and never before seen archive footage. The screening will the premiere in Portugal and the film will be released in theatres on May 18th, by its distributor Midas Filmes.
