“Birds” by Filipe Abranches, winner of the Restart award for best Portuguese short film director at IndieLisboa’09 was selected to be present at several film festivals in Italy, Serbia, Ukraine and Switzerland.
“Birds” will be at the 28th edition of the Asolo Art Film Festival in Italy which will be held from August 28th to September 6th. After Italy, the film will be at the Aninanima International Animation Festival at Čačak, Serbia from September 9th to September 12th. From September 28th to October 7th it will take place the International Animated Film Festival KROK. This time, Filipe Abranches’s film will be exhibited at the Ukrainian ship Zirka Dnipra. The ship will initiate its itinerary in Kiev and will proceed its trip to Zaporizhia, Kherson, Sebastopol and will commemorate its closing session in Odessa. Finally, “Birds” will be at the International Animated Festival Cinematou which will occur from October 3rd to October 11th in Geneva, Switzerland.
The film portrays the misadventure of an old woman obsessed with birds and her son, who thinks he can fly. In a special interview for IndieLisboa, Filipe Abranches explained the idea behind the film: “The idea comes from an old comic project made in 1998. However, it was only in 2006 that I found resources to produce a film based on it. The process was very interesting since it allowed me to realize better the differences between the two foundations, one being comic and the other animated film”.
Filipe Abranches is already preparing his second short, “Sanguetinta”.
