(EN) Arena at Cannes Film Festival

The short film Arenaby João Salaviza, winner of the Best Portuguese Short Film Award in IndieLisboa’09, was selected for the Short Film Competition at Cannes Film Festival.

Arenaportrays Mauro’s life, a young man who is in home arrest. João Salaviza gave an interview to IndieLisboa and explained the concept which gave birth to this story: The process was long but I wanted to explore the idea that the place where we are born determines the places where we might go. I thought this was interesting and I decided to use the home arrest system with an electronic bracelet as a metaphor for this character’s life (‚Ķ). I didn’t want to make a film in which people could comfort themselves. There is a certain feeling of emptiness from a character and a space isolated from the world and that sensation of isolation was what thrilled me most to direct this film”.

Also selected to participate in the Short Film Competition at Cannes Film Festival, there are eight more films from Denmark, Spain, Netherlands, France, Croatia, United Kingdom and Latvia.

The Festival celebrates its 62th edition and it will be held from May 13 to May 24.
