Adina Pintilie

In the new Romanian cinema landscape, her body of work stands out for its individual visual style, its cinematic experimentation and its interest in the human psyche. Her first feature Touch Me Notwon the Golden Bear and the First Feature Award at Berlinale 2018, followed by an impressive festival circuit and being acquired for cinema distribution in more than 35 countries. She directed the films Don’t Get Me Wrong, Oxygen, Diary#2and Sandpit#186, shown and awarded in festivals all over the world.

Boyd van Hoeij

Freelance film writer based in Paris and Luxembourg. He was a contributing critic for Variety before moving to The Hollywood Reporter in 2013. Boyd is also the film editor of Winq (Netherlands) and regularly contributes to De Filmkrant. He is a Luxembourg City Film Festival programmer and the president of the Selection Committee of the Luxembourg Film Fund. He has taught film-criticism short courses and conducted shot-by-shot analysis of film classics in countries as varied as Lithuania, Portugal, Hungary, Ireland and the United States.

Ivo Ferreira

Born in Lisbon, 1975. After António Arroio Art School, he leaves London Film School and a University in Budapest for a trip to India and China that will mark his life forever. In Macau he began his activity as (co)director with O Homem da Bicicleta. He then directed the short O que Foi, and a feature, Em Volta. In 2009 Águas Mil premiered at IFFR. In the meantime he directed other short films – O Estrangeiro, Salto, Na Escama do Dragão, Equinócio – and documentaries – Vai com o Vento, À Procura de Sabino. In 2016 Cartas da Guerra premiered in competition at the Berlinale.

David Santos/Noiserv

Some call him “one-man-orchestra“ or “one-man-band“. He is known for musical composition and interpretation of themes that travel between memory, dream and reality. He released a successful debut album One Hundred Miles from Thoughtlessnessin 2008, the EP A Day in the Dayof the Days in 2010 and in October 2013, Almost Visible Orchestra, awarded Best Release of the Year by the Portuguese Society of Authors. In 2016 he released his most recent album, 00:00:00:00. He also contributes to the national cinema and theater scene.

John Canciani

He is the Artistic Director Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur since 2012. He joined Kurz und Knapp in 2006 as Head of Programme until 2012. In 2009 he became a member of the selection team and Board Member at the Swiss Youth Film Festival in Zürich. John is also since 2013 a curator at Cinema Cameo (Filmfoyer Winterthur). He has curated various other film programs and has been a jury member at numerous festivals. His film Tokyo Rock n Roll(2007) was shown at 18 festivals all over the world.

Payal Kapadia

Mumbai based filmmaker and artist. It is between minor, ephemeral feminine gestures that she tries to find the truth of her cinematic practice. Her film Afternoon Cloudspremiered at Cinéfondation in Cannes 2017 and was selected for numerous festivals. Her documentary And What is the Summer Saying had its world premiere at the Berlinale 2018. It went on to receive the Special Jury Prize at IDFA and the Best Short Film Award in Fribourg. Her short The Last Mango Before Monsoon premiered in Oberhausen 2015, where it was awarded the FIPRESCI and Special Jury Prize.

Arnaud Gourmelen

Born in 1976 in Paris, he started programming for film festivals such as Angers, Brest, Biarritz and Pantin. In 2005, he became the program manager of Premiers Plans Angers where he kept on discovering new filmmakers from all over Europe. He also curated numerous retrospectives dedicated to, among others, Aki Kaurismäki, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean-Luc Godard, Barbet Schroeder, Nanni Moretti and Luis Buñuel. From 2011 to 2018, he worked as a programmer for Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. He now scouts now films for Karlovy Vary, Brussels and Zurich.

Iván Villarmea Alvarez

Iván Villarmea Álvarez (A Corunna, 1981) works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He is the author of the book Documenting Cityscapes. Urban Change in Contemporary Non-Fiction Film(2015) and co-editor of two volumes Jugar con la Memória. El Cine Portugués en el Siglo XXI(2014) and New Approaches to Cinematic Space(2019). Since 2011 he writes for the film criticism online magazine A Cuarta Parede.

Patrick Holzapfel

Patrick Holzapfel works as a writer, filmmaker and curator. In 2016 he received the Siegfried-Kracauer-scholarship. His texts are published in various journals and publications in German and English language. He is editor-in-chief of the German language website Jugend ohne Film and also works for the Austrian Film Museum.

Frederico Serra

Director and producer. He is one of the founders of Take it Easy, a Lisbon based 17-year-old independent production company focused on storytelling and character driven scripts. He has been producing shorts, feature films and television series in a broad array of genres, spanning from fiction to documentary to animation, horror or comedy. These projects have gathered awards and special mentions in film festivals all around the world.

Pandora da Cunha Telles

Before founding her production company, she worked at UniPortugal, Animatógrafo and Filmes de Fundo where she produced feature and short films. In 2009 she founded, with Pablo Iraola, Ukbar Filmes. She has produced numerous fiction and documentary projects for cinema and television – with a tendency towards narrative fiction – and invests in new Portuguese filmmakers and international projects. Her most recent productions have been selected for Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and IDFA.

Wouter Jansen

Worked as head of programming at Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen during the first 10 editions. In 2013 he started the festival strategy and distribution company Some Shorts that specializes in daring short films and feature documentaries. This has resulted in a catalogue of films premiering at prestigious festivals and winning multiple awards like Academy Awards, the European Film Award and main prizes at Cannes, Berlin, Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand.

Juliana Antunes

Juliana Antunes graduated in cinema, specializing in directing and screenwriting, in Belo Horizonte. She produced, directed and wrote the feature Baronesa, best film at Havana, FIC Valdivia, IndieLisboa, and FIDMarseille in 2017 (and best Opera Prima for the magazine La Internacional Cinefilia). She worked as a programmer at CINE 104 and founded and programs Cineclube Aranha. She also directed and wrote the short Plano Controle, awarded in Brasília (2018) and is preparing her next feature, Bate e Volta Copacabana.

Massimo Lechi

Film and theatre critic. He studied Literature at the University of Genoa and worked as assistant director and production assistant for several years. Since 2006 he has intensively written reviews and festival reports for Italian and English-language magazines. In 2012 he published his first book and became a freelance lecturer in film and theatre history. He has also been part of critics’ and international juries in Thessaloniki, Istanbul, Ankara, Drama, Chemnitz, Venice, Berlin, among other festivals.

Philippe Ciompi

He is a film sound designer and dubbing mixer with several years of experience in Britain, Switzerland, China, France, and other countries. His work explores the ways in which sound creates perceptual networks of space and time. He works as a film editor, composer and sound artist, and is a visiting lecturer for sound design at the Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths College, as well as at HEAD. Recent works include collaborations with Ben Rivers & Ben Russell, Jumana Manna, Dieudo Hamadi, Elene Naveriani, Andrew Kötting and Sarah Vanagt, among others.

Rachael Rakes

Head curator and manager of the curatorial programme at De Appel in Amsterdam. She is also editor at large for Verso Books, and programmer at large for the Film Society of Lincoln Center where she co-curates Art of the Real. Shehas taught on documentary at The New School and Harvard Summer School. From 2011 to 2017, she was film editor for the Brooklyn Rail. Shealsocontributed toArtforumand the Village Voice, and other publications. She has organized exhibitions for A.I.R., Centre Pompidou, ArtCenter/South Florida, Malmö Konsthall, among others.

Susana Rodrigues

Latin America and Portugal delegate curator to Karlovy Vary and Cinéma du réel, programming advisor to the Bildrausch FilmFest Basel and member of the selection committees of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival and the IFFR Hubert Bals Fund. International consultant at Doha Film Institute; external expert assessing projects for European Union’s Creative Europe – Media. She co-founded the distribution and production outfit Vaivem and organizes the travelling Portuguese Film Week showcase and AR: Argentine Film Festival.

Bruno Pernadas

Graduated in Music – Jazz variation – by Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He began his musical career at 13 with the study of Classical Guitar, later studying Jazz at Luiz Villas-Boas School. He released three albums in which he combines several musical genres, such as jazz, space age pop and electronic music. He is part of the groups Minta & The Brook Trout, Suzie’sVelvet, The Sun Ra Project, Montanhas Azuis and Kikagaku Moyo (the latter as a producer). He works regularly as a composer for cinema, TV, theater and contemporary dance.

Isilda Sanches

She is known mainly as a journalist and musical promoter, but also worked in film and television, after studying Social Communication course at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanasin 1992. Musical promotion turned out to be her most natural territory. She wrote for newspapers such as Capital, Blitz, Já and Diário de Notícias and worked at XFM, Voxx, Marginal and Oxygen (where she would stay for 16 years) radios. Currently, she works for Antena 3 radio.

Tiago da Bernarda/Gato Mariano

Freelance illustrator, author of the webcomic O Gato Mariano. He graduated in Communication Sciences at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanasand later studied Illustration for New Media at ETIC. He collaborated with festivals like Milhões de Festa, Zigurfest and Black Bass – Évora Fest and occasionally with Rimas e Batidaswebsite. In 2019, he launched the anthology O Gato Mariano: Críticas Felinas(2014-2018), which gathered illustrations of his critics towards the Portuguese independent music scene.
