SEMINAR

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION AND PROMOTION

May 8th

Florida Hotel, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration extended until May 7th

Moderator: Paulo Viveiros (University Professor)

Seminar dedicated to cinema and audiovisual students and professionals, and to all who wish to assimilate knowledge and share experiences with the many guests present. This year the proposal focuses on a single day of training with four panels: From Screenplay to Production, International Co-production, Promotion (Festivals) and Sales, and one Case Study. Through the testimony of experienced professionals, we hope that this learning will create useful insights for practical application and be a good starting point for future projects.

Panel 1: From Screenplay to Production

Guests: José Manuel Fernandes (Director), Mário Gajo de Carvalho (director / producer), João Trabulo (director / producer), Gonçalo Galvão Teles (writer / director / producer / Lusófona University professor).

The hability to project the script in a way that favours its completion as a film is a skill that any director / author / screenwriter should develop. The exploration of the identity of each film by the producers is an increasingly important work, that allows the development of schemes that resize the project to its most appropriate implementation. We will try to understand the multiple ways of ‘doing’ in relation to product / film, towards its best achievement and also analyse the situation of young cinema graduates in the labor market.

Panel 2: International Co-production

Guests: Pandora Gagnon da Cunha Telles (Producer), Thierry Louna (producer / distributor), Miguel Gonçalves Mendes (producer / director), Hugo Vieira da Silva (director).

A co-production, as a way to broaden and balance the financial perspective, plays a crucial role today in the making of any film project. We will look for a different approach in finding partners for international co-productions in order to create a potential field for Portuguese production. Opening our market means creating conditions for speeding up new projects and reducing the means of production for all parties. There are recent examples of successful Portuguese co-productions that will be interesting to know.

Panel 3: Promotion (Festivals) and Sales

Guests: Miguel Valverde (IndieLisboa), Raul Camargo (Festival de Valdivia, Chile), David Oberto (Torino Film Festival, Italy), Thure Munkholm (CPH-PIX, Denmark).

Festivals have proved to be a healthy alternative toexhibition formatted in more commercial and conservative schemes. Festivals are also great platforms for discovery and deployment of many writers / directors, allowing the creation of a market for new cinematographies. Moreover, the success of films in important international film festivals has helped their sale, and with it, the projection of a greater potential for artistic quality and economic value.

Case Study: Sardinha em Lata, an original studio

Guests: José Miguel Ribeiro (producer / director / Lusófona University professor), Nuno Beato (producer / director), Eva Yébenes (producer).

A studio with a creative attitude, a unique vision and a willingness to make films in Portugal. Sardinha em Lata bets and takes a stand in animation and short films, an ambitious project that has proved productive and winning, because they believe in the good Portuguese creators – writers and animators – and that it is possible to captivate the international market with good products.

Through the testimony of experienced professionals, this learning should create useful insights for practical application and be a good starter for future projects. At the same time, this seminar will have a formative dynamic range and will help stimulate ideas, renew concepts, increasing the potential for execution and making us reformulate appropriate and creative strategies.
