Since its first edition, one of the main goals of IndieLisboa has been to promote Portuguese cinema internationally. Along with the presentation of programmes of Portuguese films abroad (within the initiative IndieLisboa Days – Portuguese Cinema on tour), IndieLisboa has been exchanging suggestions of films in partnership with various international festivals.

After having presented the short film “Visionary Iraq” by Gabriel Abrantes to the selection committee of the Rotterdam Film Festival (the film was exhibited in the Spectrum Shorts section), IndieLisboa proposed the short film Arena by João Salaviza to be in the demanding competition of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Arena won the award for best short film at IndieLisboa’09 as well as the Palme D’Or at Cannes Film Festival in its last edition and will now be in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 following the attacks on the World Trade Center. It aims at spurring the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan through an annual celebration of film, music and culture. This year, the festival will take place from April 21st to May 2nd.
