Total Verhoeven

Paul Verhoeven is one of the two directors we will honour in the Independent Hero section of IndieLisboa 2016. Before we announce the next surprise for this section – one of today’s most brilliant actors’ work will be shown at the festival – let’s relish this rediscovery.

In collaboration with Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, we are presenting the first complete retrospective in Portugal dedicated to the works of the Dutch filmmaker whom the general public loves, the director who used violence and sex in order to make socio-political statements. In 2015, the guiltiest of all guilty pleasures, Showgirls, celebrated its 20th anniversary, while Robocop (1987) and Total Recall (1990) are on their way to their 30th. But before that, we get to know a different Verhoeven – pre-Hollywood – who grew as an authorial voice in his home country. A filmmaker with no fear to explore his very singular and daring voice, which was already noticeable in Diary of a Hooker (1971) and Turkish Delight (1973), his first two feature-length films. IndieLisboa will screen his 21 films, including short and feature films.
