After having released in Portugal Paolo’s Sorrentino film Il Divo, the distributor Alambique will release another film from IndieLisboa. Pablo Larraín’s second film, Tony Manero, was part of the Emerging Cinema section at IndieLisboa’09 and will now be released in the Portuguese cinemas.

This is a tale of obsession set in 1979 in Santiago, Chile, during the oppressive political system run by Augusto Pinochet. Raúl Peralta, a man in his middle fifties, has a fantasy of being Tony Manero, the disco-sound star of  Saturday Night Fever.

When the state television launches a dance-like-Travolta contest, Raúl sees a chance of achieving the fame and recognition that he desires. In the meantime, tanks rumble through the city’s streets as Pinochet’s regime clamps down on antigovernment activists.

Hence, Tony Manero joins the list of films that find an opportunity of being released in the Portuguese cinemas after having been showed at IndieLisboa.
